For Dr. Lawrence Rudski, the JGH’s Director of the Azrieli Heart Centre and Medical Director of Virtual Care, the words guide a large part of his team’s innovative work at the hospital, much of which has been made possible through donations to the JGH Foundation.

The current challenges in the JGH’s Emergency Department (ED) – which has approximately 84,000 visits a year – are very real. But the comparatively high standard of care is partially the result of community support in the form of donations to the JGH Foundation.

In 2023, the JGH Foundation is on the cusp of publicly launching a major multi-year fundraising campaign with an unprecedented fundraising goal. The centrepiece of this campaign is a transformational digital health initiative inspired by the notion of “Care Everywhere”.

A group of healthcare administrators grew moustaches as part of a fundraising campaign in November 2022. Funds raised went towards the health and well-being of staff at the JGH and CIUSSS West-Central Montreal.

“I like getting people together so I thought we could use our leadership as influencers for a good cause,” said André Poitras, Associate Director of Nursing.

Dr. Té Vuong, a Radiation Oncologist at the JGH, is on a mission to prove that rectal cancer can be cured effectively without surgery.

“Our work was kickstarted by donations to the JGH Foundation,” said Dr. Vuong. “It solved the big obstacle in research of getting started – you need to provide preliminary safety and efficacy data or no one will fund you, but the JGH Foundation did and now our research is getting noticed and having results.”

Dr. Karl Weiss is very excited about the work that will be conducted over the coming years at the JGH’s Jess and Mark Pathy Centre of Excellence in Infectious Diseases, which he leads.

“We are working to learn how we can use AI to change things and help the hospital become a leader in this field,” said Dr. Weiss.

In 2021, Montrealer Ricky Black and his partner Sophie Marquis committed to a major donation to the JGH’s Rheumatology Division. Part of the donation will go towards funding a research nurse.

“All of a sudden, my headache about funding our nurse disappeared,” said Dr. Laeora Berkson, Chief of Rheumatology at the JGH. “I am so deeply grateful.”
