Caring for our community

The Pharmaprix Weekend to End Women's Cancers, now in its ninth year as one of Quebec's leading fundraising events, serves as an inspiration for the entire community to unite in the fight against all women's cancers. This marquee event also showcases the tremendous value and power of the enduring partnerships that the JGH Foundation enjoys with deeply committed corporate citizens such as Pharmaprix, a leading Quebec retail drug-store group with a network of 176 pharmacist-owners and their staff, in communities across the province.

Pharmaprix's involvement with the Weekend began in 2010, when the group decided to take on a leadership role in raising awareness as well as vital funds in support of the fight against a disease that affects the lives of so many of our mothers, sisters, daughters and friends throughout Quebec, by becoming the event's official national title sponsor.

Pharmaprix's commitment goes well beyond its sponsorship of the Weekend. Each year, Pharmaprix also fields a team of walkers supported by an army of volunteers who help with fundraising activities, work as crew, cheer participants along the route, and more. “Our employees, our customers and business associates, as well as their families and friends, have really taken the cause to heart," says Josée Blouin, associate-owner of a Pharmaprix store in LaSalle and co-captain of the Pharmaprix team for the past three years. “Some come from as far away as Quebec City, Aylmer and Gatineau to be part of a grass-roots movement that is incredibly rewarding at a personal level and a unique team-building experience. The many fundraising, awareness-raising and training activities that lead up to the event provide an extraordinary venue for learning about the latest advances in the treatment of cancer; for hearing about the real-life experiences and courageous battle of cancer patients and survivors; and for fostering relationships and developing social support networks that can help in times of need. We get more from our participation in the Weekend than we give, and I strongly encourage everyone to come and try the experience."

In 2012, Pharmaprix fielded an impressive team of 310 walkers and volunteers—almost 100 more than in 2011—who together raised over $380,000 for breast and gynecologic cancer research and care at the Segal Cancer Centre at the JGH. The group will be returning as the official national title sponsor for the 2013 edition, with the aim of increasing its team to 350 walkers and a fundraising goal of $450,000.

“Pharmaprix has a rich history of caring for the health and well-being of Quebecers, not only through our pharmacy services, but through our commitment to giving back to the communities we serve," says Nicolas Caprio, Senior Vice-President, who has participated in each edition of the Weekend since 2010 and has now taken a leadership role by agreeing to become one of the co-chairs of the 2013 edition. “These days, there are few people whose lives have not been touched in some way by cancer. We are proud of the dedication shown by our partners, associates, employees, and their family and friends, and the valuable role they are playing in addressing the healthcare needs of Quebec women and helping them lead healthy, active lives."

“The entire JGH family is grateful to the Pharmaprix family for joining us in the fight against women's cancers. Together, we do have the power to heal," concurs JGH Foundation President and CEO Myer Bick.
