Event Description

The Jewish General Hospital Foundation held the 24th Annual JGH Silver Star Mercedes-Benz Golf Classic on June 6, 2016 at Elm Ridge Country Club. The event was Co-chaired by Louis Clément and Gary Wechsler and will honour Martin Thibodeau, Bruce Kent, Tony Loffreda, all of RBC.

Since its inauguration, the Classic has raised over $18 million to improve the medical care, life expectancy and quality of life of the people of Montreal, Quebec and beyond. The key to this success has been the strong partnerships with Montreal's corporate and financial services communities. More specifically, it is the leadership of these communities, whose efforts will ensure an impressive outcome. Past co-chairs and honourees include such pre-eminent Quebec and Canadian personalities such as Mr. Morton Brownstein (Browns Shoes), Mr. Charles Larente (Scotia McLeod), the Broccolini Family (Broccolini Construction), the Honourable E. Leo Kolber (Claridge), Mr. Mel Ellen (G A Grier), Mr. Mark Smith (Pandion Limited), Mr. Michael Roach (CGI), Mr Jacques Menard (BMO) and the Schwartz and Segel families of Dorel. We are proud to have RBC on board for this very special Event.

The 2016 Golf Classic raised $900,000 which will be allocated towards the new state of the art Nephrology Centre, headed up by Drs. Mark Lipman and Gershon Frisch at the Jewish General Hospital. They have one of the fastest growing hemodialysis programs in Montreal, performing 31,500 treatments yearly, currently operating out of 2 Hemodialysis Units, both of which are running at full capacity. To address these needs, a new single layer, state of the art hemodialysis unit will be created. This new unit will not only amalgamate the 2 current units but will offer better and more efficient care for the patients, will help control infection, etc. As well, the new units' larger area will streamline services and allow for the addition of 9 dialysis stations, bringing the total number of dialysis stations to 46 and allowing the Division to accommodate up to 54 more patients.

The weather held up and another wonderful day was had by all. We wish to thank the many companies and groups who participated by giving their time, energy and financial support to this worthwhile and highly rewarding cause. A very special thank you goes to the RBC team, longstanding event host Silver Star Mercedes-Benz, the members of the Golf Classic organizing committee and our dynamic and ever-helpful partners at the JGH Auxiliary.
