18th Annual JGH Silver Star Mercedes-Benz Golf Classic
in memory of Mel Ellen
Benefiting the Centre for Child Development and Mental Health

This year’s 18th edition of the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) Silver Star Mercedes-Benz Golf Classic, held in honour of the memory of Mel Ellen, was a resounding success, raising over $940,000 in support of the JGH Department of Child Psychiatry.
These vital funds will contribute to the development of the very first Centre for Child Development and Mental Health in Quebec – a new and much-needed facility in view of the growing number of children who are suffering from emotional or behavioural problems in Montreal and across the province. The Centre will allow a greater number of these children at risk and their families to benefit from the inclusive, compassionate and comprehensive care they need and have the healthy and productive life they deserve.
To further our dedication to children and their future, we encouraged the participation of young adults and professionals in this year’s tournament. Thank you to all those corporations and individuals who believed in the next generation and supported this initiative. In addition, we extend our most heartfelt thanks to those who participated, gave their time, energy and financial support to this worthwhile and highly rewarding cause: The dedicated members of the Golf Classic committee; longstanding event host Sam Eltes of Silver Star Mercedes-Benz; our major sponsors Charles Larente and Hamish Angus of ScotiaMcLeod, CIBC and Ned Goodman; the invaluable support of all our event’s contributors; our dynamic and ever-helpful partners at the JGH Auxiliary; Marsha Brumer, whose creativity and flare guarantees the most memorable evening cocktail in town; and the staff and members of Hillsdale Golf & Country Club for their close collaboration. Special thanks also go to the Foundation staff, particularly Tali Chemtob, Adrianna Di Pardo and Mary Etzitian, who spared no effort to help deliver such a high-caliber event.

Actively involved with the Golf Classic from its very beginning 18 years ago, Mel Ellen would no doubt have been be pleased by the many friends and family members who came out to pay tribute to his memory. He would certainly have been proud to see so many people uphold his enduring dedication and commitment to the well-being of our community by supporting the JGH and this unique initiative on behalf of our most vulnerable, yet most valuable treasure: our youth.
Everyone who had a hand in this year’s event can take great pride in this wonderful accomplishment. Thank you for bestowing to our children the most precious gift there is: the opportunity to achieve their full potential.
